I wants to convince the reader that all his attempts for love are bound to fail, unless he tries most actively to develop his total personality, so as to achieve a productive orientation; that satisfaction in individual love cannot be attained without the capacity to love one’s neighbor, without true humility, courage, faith and discipline.

  • The Art of Loving, written by psychoanalyst and philosopher Erich Fromm

When I was scrolling down posts on X, I got fascinated on this phrase and it stuck in my head for a whole night. The ability to love your neighbor, true humility, courage, faith and dicipline are the keys to love someone or to be in love. I totally agree on that. This phrase made me rethink about my previous relaitonships and I could understand why it hadn't working at that (Q) time. I was so obsessed with my career, my feeling and my life in the US, that I couldn't have any energy or time to pay attention to others. Moreover, I wasn't able to see myself objectivly on how previlage I was to get all this education or how egocentric I was when I compare research in Korea with the research in America. Love doesn't happened to comes to you. You need to work on it to be in the mindset that you are capable to have it and capable to give it.

When I grow up, I always thought that people just fall in love and get marriaged. They happened to be in the same place and get attracted to each other, not knowing there are a whole another layer on endeavour to keep the love. It made me admire all the people who got marriged and being in a long term relationship. How did they manage all the things in life? How my parents went through all of these?
