Before choosing an AI template, decide whether you need a photo or a video
A dramatic portrait in a short video can hide several different pieces of work. There may be a newly generated still image, a slow zoom, a transition, a soundtrack and captions. Searching for the name of the effect does not necessarily reveal which tool made which part.
Before uploading a photo or paying for a template, write down the file you want to finish with. A square profile picture, a printable portrait and a ten-second vertical video are different deliverables.
Disclosure: I maintain RetroPrompt, a still-portrait and prompt project. This guide was prepared with AI assistance. It describes a planning workflow, not a comparison based on testing every template service.
Start with the final frame
If the result you need is a single picture, concentrate on likeness, framing and image quality. A video editor may be unnecessary. Keep your original photograph and compare the generated face at the same display size. Strong styling is not a reason to accept changed facial proportions.
If you need a moving clip, describe the movement separately. Is it just a zoom over one image, a sequence of different portraits, or continuous motion by the subject? A still-image generator can supply a frame, but it does not automatically supply motion, timing or an editable video project.
Separate the components
A useful brief has four lines: the source photo, the desired still-image look, the movement or transition, and the export destination. For example: an authorized head-and-shoulders photo; restrained 1980s studio styling; a slow push-in; a vertical clip for a chosen social platform.
This brief lets you check a product page precisely. Look for what it actually exports, whether the result is editable, and whether its example includes sound or transitions made elsewhere. If those details are absent, ask before treating the preview as a promise.
Treat a preview as a preview
A large promotional image does not tell you how a small avatar will crop. Similarly, a video preview does not establish the resolution, duration or watermark conditions of the exported file. Check those items against your intended use, then inspect the downloaded result rather than relying only on the editor preview.
Keep permissions attached to the project
Use a reference photo you are entitled to edit. Keep the original separate from generated versions, and label creative AI images when sharing them. A nostalgic picture should not be presented as a genuine photograph taken decades ago. Music and other assets need their own usage permissions; permission to edit a portrait does not answer those questions.
For the still-image part, I maintain a collection of prompts at RetroPrompt: https://retroprompt.site/prompts/?utm_source=tilnote&utm_medium=referral . The site currently creates static portraits and does not provide video templates or video export.
A clearer deliverable makes the tool choice easier. It also prevents paying for an attractive effect that produces the wrong kind of file.
