A folder of attractive AI portraits does not tell you how to make the next one better. A useful prompt notebook records the decision behind each attempt: what stayed fixed, what changed, and what you noticed in the output.
Disclosure: I maintain RetroPrompt, the portrait project referenced below. This article was prepared with AI assistance. The examples are suggested record formats, not results from a measured experiment.
Start with one question
Write the question before generating another image. For example: does a plain studio backdrop make the portrait easier to use as a small avatar? This is more actionable than a goal such as make it more retro.
Keep a separate note for the intended use. A circular profile image, a wide website header and a printable keepsake require different framing. Without that context, it is easy to prefer an image that looks impressive at full size but fails in its actual placement.
Separate fixed instructions from the variable
Use a short fixed block for the subject and composition you want to preserve. Put the styling decision you are exploring in another block. If you are comparing backgrounds, avoid also changing the pose, jacket, lighting and expression in the same attempt.
This does not make image generation deterministic. It simply makes your notes easier to interpret. Even with identical instructions, outputs may vary; record a seed or model version only if the tool actually exposes it.
An example notebook entry:
Question: Which backdrop keeps the face readable in a small circular crop?
Fixed brief: head-and-shoulders framing, neutral expression, the same reference photo and the same lighting request.
Variant A: plain warm gray studio background.
Variant B: muted blue school-portrait background.
Review: compare face visibility, edge separation and the final crop. Do not evaluate only the decorative details.
Result: leave this blank until you have inspected the outputs. A template should never invent a winning variant.
Save enough context to understand the result later
Record the date, tool name, exact prompt, visible settings and the name of the downloaded output. If the interface does not show a model version, write not exposed rather than guessing. If an attempt fails or times out, note that separately from an image you reviewed and rejected.
Use an internal reference label for the source photo instead of putting personal photos into a public notebook. Keep private material in storage appropriate for that material. A shared prompt library usually needs the instructions and observations, not the person's original image.
For a small project, a plain text document is enough. A simple sequence such as portrait-01, portrait-02 and portrait-03 is more useful than filenames like final-final-new when each entry points to the corresponding prompt.
Describe observations instead of scores you cannot support
Write the left ear looks distorted, glasses no longer match the reference, or the face becomes too small in the circular crop. These notes identify a next action. A label such as quality 9/10 is harder to use unless you have already defined what the scale measures.
Separate resemblance from styling. A result may follow a retro color palette while changing facial proportions. Conversely, a recognizable face may appear against a background that does not fit the brief. One overall score hides that distinction.
Turn a good entry into a reusable starting point
When an instruction is useful for your purpose, copy it into a template and mark the fields that should change. Keep the original observation alongside it, including limitations. Avoid turning one appealing result into a promise that the prompt will preserve every face.
My project provides retro portrait prompt starting points. Use a starting point to begin a notebook entry, then record your own changes and review the output in its intended format.
The notebook has done its job when you can explain why you kept or discarded a result and what you will change next. You do not need hundreds of prompts to get that benefit.
